Description

Does your talent show in your self-tapes?

Auditions are a skill of their own, and even experienced actors can struggle to translate their talent into a compelling self-tape. You might be brilliant once you’re on set, but getting to that point means making an impression in just a few minutes, often with limited preparation time, little context and no director to guide you.

In this three-session online workshop, Dominic Kelly, one of the lead coaches of our One Year Training and our audition coach, will help you approach self-tapes and auditions with greater confidence, freedom and precision. With over twenty years of experience in coaching actors on film and television, Dom brings practical insight into what casting directors and directors look for, what makes an audition stand out, and how to make the most of the opportunity you have been given.

You’ll explore how to prepare effectively in a short amount of time, analyse the information you’ve received, make interesting character choices and deliver a performance that feels natural, specific and true to you. You’ll also learn how to introduce yourself professionally and handle the technical and practical side of self-taping without letting it get in the way of your acting.

You’ll work on a scene, create your own self-tape and receive feedback and coaching to help you understand what works, what could be stronger and how to improve. With Dom’s background in the Meisner Technique, the focus is on moving beyond overthinking and finding the freedom to respond truthfully, even under audition pressure.

Whether you’re learning to self-tape for the first time or have years of professional experience, there is always more to discover about how you present your work. You don’t need expensive equipment or a professional studio to get started. You need the right tools, a clear process and the ability to trust your choices.

The goal is to make self-taping less stressful and more creative, help you recognise what casting professionals need to see, and give your talent a better chance to come through when it matters.

SESSION OUTLINE

Session One — Understanding the Audition

What are casting directors and directors actually looking for in a self-tape? Learn how to break down audition instructions, identify the essential information in a scene and prepare effectively when time is limited. Explore how to make clear, interesting choices without overcomplicating the work.

Session Two — From Preparation to Performance

Put your preparation into practice. Work on your scene, explore character and relationships, and discover how to make specific choices while remaining truthful and natural. Learn how to work with the camera, avoid unnecessary takes and stop letting the pressure of getting it right take you out of the moment.

Session Three — Your Self-Tape, Refined

Bring your work to the next level. Explore how to make your self-tape engaging and professional, from your introduction to your final performance. Receive feedback and coaching on your work, identify areas for improvement and learn how to apply these insights to future auditions.

WHO IS IT FOR?

This workshop is for actors at all stages of their journey, from beginners preparing their first self-tapes to trained and professional actors who want to strengthen their audition skills.

You might feel uncertain about the technical side of self-taping, struggle to make strong choices with limited preparation, or simply want to understand what helps an audition stand out. Perhaps you feel confident on set but find auditions a different challenge altogether.

Whatever your experience, the workshop will give you practical tools to work more independently, approach auditions with greater confidence and communicate your talent more effectively on camera.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

  • Practical insight from an experienced coach
  • A clearer understanding of casting expectations: Discover what makes a self-tape effective and how to give your performance the best chance of being noticed.
  • Hands-on scene work: Apply what you learn to your own performance rather than relying on theory alone.
  • Personal feedback and coaching: Understand what is working, where you can improve and how to approach your next audition.
  • A more effective preparation process: Learn to analyse audition material, make strong character choices and work confidently with limited time.
  • Greater freedom on camera: Develop a more natural, truthful performance without getting caught up in overthinking or endless retakes.
  • Practical skills you can keep using: Build a repeatable approach to self-taping that you can apply to future auditions, wherever your career takes you.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A device with a camera, a quiet space where you can work and record, and a willingness to experiment with your acting. You don’t need professional equipment to participate. Just bring yourself, your curiosity and the desire to get more out of your auditions.
